After railroad magnate and former California Governor, Leland Stanford, and his wife, Jane Lathrop Stanford, lost their only child, Leland, Jr., to typhoid in 1884, they decided to build Leland Stanford Junior University as the most fitting memorial.

This exhibit contains materials from several collections within the University Archives documenting the University's founders and their families, including photographs, writings, correspondence, and administrative records. Included are materials from the Jane Lathrop Stanford Papers, Leland Stanford Papers, Leland Stanford, Jr. Papers, Stanford Historical Photograph Collection, and the Stanford Family Photographs.
