Aiyana Mo'Nay Stanley-Jones, a precious seven-year-old little girl, was shot in the head while she was sleeping in the living room near her grandmother in the house where they lived. On May 16, 2010, a member of the Detroit Police Department’s Special Response Team burst into the wrong door during a raid on the house. The officer who shot the little girl at first falsely claimed that he saw Aiyana’s grandmother reaching for a gun. Following two trials that resulted in hung juries, he will not be retried.

The Detroit chapter of the Black Youth Project 100 (BYP100) and Black Lives Matter Detroit organized a rally on what would have been her 14th birthday. Aiyana’s grandmother Mertilla Jones said, "Accountability needs to be expected from cases like this, because cops can't keep killing people and getting away with it.”

In 2019, the city of Detroit settled with Aiyana Stanley-Jones’ family for $8.25 million.
