Ahmaud Arbery, 25 years old, was a former high school football player who lived with his mother and liked to work out to stay fit. He was out for a run in Satilla Shores, Georgia, in the early afternoon of February 23, 2020, when he was chased and gunned down by a father and son in a pickup truck, along with a third man in another vehicle, who thought that Ahmaud looked like a recent robbery suspect. Ahmaud fought for his life but he was unarmed, unfortunately.

Initially no case was brought, and the three white suspects were not arrested. That changed after a video of the attack, taken by the third suspect, surfaced. It provoked national outrage and resulted in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) taking over the case. Some activists are not encouraged as a result of the GBI’s complicated history, with the agency being accused of having ties with the KKK, and allegedly mishandling past investigations.

Two of the suspects, the father and son, were charged on May 7, 2020, with murder and aggravated assault. The third suspect was charged on May 21, 2020, with felony murder and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment.
