Professor Falkow discussed his pre-Stanford years, his early life, background and education, and how he became interested in microbiology at a very early age. He talked about his experiences prior to coming to Stanford and the circumstances that brought him here, and what happened when he first arrived. He recalled faculty members he recruited to Stanford, and discussed his teaching and his role in changing the culture of the department. He offered his thoughts on the field of microbiology and how it has evolved. He discussed the impact of bringing people in the physical and natural sciences together with the biologists and biomedical scientists and how this has changed the way science is practiced.
