Jazz Educational Programs
The educational program of the festival began in 1959 when it was decided to use a portion of the profits from the first festival to fund scholarships and a faculty position for jazz studies at Monterey Peninsula College. The festival sponsored an annual competition for high school jazz bands and combos which developed into the Next Generation Festival, a parallel event held every spring in Monterey for the purpose of bringing together the best high school jazz bands and musicians. The recordings in the archives feature many high school students who have later become professional performers in their own right.
