New York Herald Tribune, October 8, 1950, p. 6. -- “More serious but still quite a distance from abstraction at its profoundest are the paintings by James. E. Allen at the Frank Rhen Galleries. These are all, despite a range of titular reference of a wholly sentimental order, variations of a set of themes of bathers or dancers--al fresco. Careful study of natural human form is embodied in stylized outlining and graceful arabesque composition by Mr. Allen, an experienced hand at decorative design judging by the sureness of these light exercises. “Color Fantasy” makes a mildly arresting rhythmic design of pink nudes and horses and blue lake and brown mountains in one of the most animate of his picture on current display.”

    • review: Offin, Charles Z. "Gallery Previews in New York". Pictures on Exhibit, October, 1950. -- "James E. Allen, a new artist for the Rehn Galleries, is more interested in exploring the possibilities for varying his color patterns than in variety of subject matter, In fact, almost a single theme dominates the show -- several nude females standing ankle deep in a pool of water, with a mountain as background. Coloring, patterning and drawing are all simplified and harmonized into evocatively pensive designs. Every part of the picture grows out of its mood and also contributes to it. In the same treatment of simplified patterning are several canvases in which horses playfully disport themselves."
