Stages of Production
This section provides a view of the multiple stages of production for the frieze, discussed more fully in the section on the frieze itself. First, the 1937 sketches made by W.H. Coetzer, some in two stages. Second, the one-third size clay maquettes made individually by the sculptors appointed in 1942 – Peter Kirchhoff, Frikkie Kruger, Laurika Postma and Hennie Potgieter – preserved in plaster. Third, the scaling up of the maquettes to full size with an armature to support the clay, worked on by all the sculptors, fortunately recorded in photographs before they were destroyed while casting them in plaster. Fourth, the final carving of the plaster panels in marble at the Florence workshops of Romano Romanelli in 1949-50, before being returned to South Africa and installed in the monument.
