Rainbow Family Gathering, 1973 38 items
In July 1973 near Pass Creek in Wyoming's Shoshone National Forest, the Rainbow Family of Living Light encamped for their second annual gathering. A local observer described the camp of an estimated 2,000 celebrants as "lean-tos everywhere....colorful costumes intermingled with nude bodies scattered over the 80-100 acre forest." The originally suspicious and mildly hostile attitudes of many locals (officials and residents) was rapidly changed by the peaceful, cooperative and very friendly approach of most participants. The site was visited by a U.S. Attorney, the state Chief of Narcotics, "and about every lawman in the state" without incident. Bob Fitch documented the gathering as part of a magazine assignment. Please note: many images contain nudity.
