After the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968, Bob Fitch renewed his commitment to documenting social justice movements and spent the next seven years photographing the organizing efforts of Cesar Chavez and United Farm Workers Union. Fitch's images capture key moments in the history of the UFW; Between 1968 and 1974, at the invitation of the UFW President and organizer Cesar Chavez, Bob Fitch photographed union organizing activities including; agricultural field work, living conditions, pickets, marches, funerals, anti-picket police brutality, prominent supporters, intimate planning sessions and the first union contracts in 1970 (Coachella Valley, CA). The Chavez stamp issued by the U.S. Post office in 2002 is a rendering of one of Bob’s photos of Chavez.
