Search Overview

It is possible to both search across Spotlight at Stanford exhibits, as well as search within most exhibits in different ways, depending upon the items they contain and how each exhibit is configured. Discovery for exhibit items from within SearchWorks is also enabled.

Discoverability for items in exhibits via SearchWorks

When an item in an exhibit has an item record in SearchWorks, there is now a block on the left-hand side of the SearchWorks item record page indicating the item is featured in an exhibit, with a direct link to the item in the exhibit. If the item is in multiple exhibits, they will all appear in the block, each with a link to the item in that exhibit. Check out this example item record, where you will discover that the image is featured in four Spotlight at Stanford exhibits.

When viewing a collection record in SearchWorks, if any item in the collection is featured in an exhibit (and often there would be multiple items, of course), there is now a block on the left-hand side of the SearchWorks collection record page indicating that an item (or items) in the collection is featured in an exhibit, with a direct link to the exhibit. If there are item(s) in multiple exhibits, they will all appear in the block, with a link to each exhibit. Check out this example collection record, where you will discover that one or more images from the Stanford Historical Photograph Collection are featured in more than 22 Spotlight at Stanford exhibits.

Search across exhibits

From the exhibits home page, users can search for a specific exhibit or exhibits, and they can also search across all exhibits for a specific item or items .

To search for exhibits by title, enter one or more keywords in an exhibit title or sub-title.

Item metadata for all items in exhibits can also be searched. This includes metadata for exhibit items that were added from the Stanford Digital Repository, as a IIIF resource, or as a non-SDR item. After executing a search, users can limit their search by category, title, or date range; group results by exhibit; sort by relevance; and display results in either list or gallery view. Please note: search across is searching content (images, audio, video) and its associated metadata, but not exhibit-specific text provided by the exhibit creator.

Search within an exhibit

Search-enabled exhibits

Most exhibits choose to enable search, and often include fielded search as well. This enables the user to search across the metadata for all items in a given exhibit that have been added using the Add items menu, whether they are from the Stanford Digital Repository, IIIF items or uploaded items. Please refer to the Search documentation for detailed information on how to configure search for your exhibit.

Search within a browse category

For browse categories with a large number of items, it can be helpful to enable search within that category. Please refer to Creating and Managing Browse Categories for information on how to enable this feature for any of your exhibit browse categories.

Full text search

Items in your exhibit that have been OCR'd and meet current specifications will be available for full text search. Items can be searched across a specific exhibit, or within each item itself. Please refer to the demonstration exhibit for full text search, the Jarndyce 19th Century Novel Collection, for more information.
