Celestial maps from the collection 33 items

Celestial maps were increasingly seen on maps during this period. World maps would have smaller celestial maps and charts around the edges, often filling in the space around double hemisphere projections. Some of the most stunning examples of this genre come from Andreas Cellarius. Cellarius wrote the Harmonia Macrocosmica in 1660, a star atlas published by Johannes Janssonius. Each of the maps featured here by Cellarius have a depiction of California as an island included on the page.
