Some of Europe’s earliest visions of Southern Africa have been expressed in maps. In their details they bring together colonial fantasies and scientific knowledge, going back to ancient authors such as Pliny the Elder and Claudius Ptolemy. Several of the maps in this section are found in the Dr. Oscar I. Norwich Collection. They range in content from North Africa to the Cape, and in authorship from Ptolemy (albeit indirectly) in the second century to the Dutch traveler Johan Nieuhof in the seventeenth.
