Collections and exhibitions of antiquities have long been part of South Africa’s material culture. But because of their origins (often in the era of British colonialism), these collections have complex meanings. Amid the post-apartheid reevaluation of cultural identities, many collections of classical antiquities have been displaced from their museum settings, whereas others still remain. For example, the collection of antiquities was displaced from the former South African Cultural Museum in 1997: in its new (restored) guise as the Slave Lodge the museum has instead foregrounded the history and legacy of Cape slavery. Many ancient Mediterranean artifacts are to today housed in university and private collections.
